The word Simha means lions, Garjana means roaring and Asana means pose. In this asana, the body take the shape like a roaring lion. Therefore, it is called Simha Garjanasana or Roaring Lion Pose.
It’s a rejuvenating and invigorating asana that is believed to release tension and stress from the face and throat.
Precaution
If a person is suffering with knee pain, he can stretch his legs straight backward keeping together while performing this asana.
Technique
- Sit in Vajrasana with knees apart as far as possible. Sit on your heels with your knees spread slightly apart and your buttocks resting on your heels. Keep your spine straight and shoulders relaxed.
- Place both the palms on the floor between the fingers pointing towards the body. Lean forward slightly and tilt the head back. Rest your hands on your knees with your fingers spread wide apart. Press your palms firmly into your knees.
- Assume a Shambhavi Mudra by opening the eyes and focus the graze between the eye brows. Inhale deeply through the nose. Open the mouth and take out the tongue as much as possible. Exhale the breath producing a rhythmic sound influencing throat, chest and abdomen.
- Look upwards toward the space between your eyebrows (the “third eye” or Ajna chakra) as you exhale. Keep your eyes wide open and focused.
- As you exhale forcefully, imagine releasing all tension, stress, and negative energy from your body. Let go of any tightness in your face, neck, and throat.
- Repeat it three times. Now, return to the prior position and massage lightly middle area and left area and right area of throat. Swallow the saliva. This will remove the irritation of the throat, if any.

Awareness
Concentration on the rhythmic sound and its effect on the throat area. Spiritually one should concentrate on Vishudhi Chakra.
